Rajwinder Singh, 22, of Hicksville, was killed on Wednesday, April 5, when he got out of his disabled tractor-trailer on the side of the interstate in Abingdon and was struck by Roosevelt resident Abbas Zaheer, 19, who police say lost control of his Toyota Camry.
Shortly after 6 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, troopers from the JFK Memorial Highway Barrack were called to a stretch of southbound I-95 in Abington to investigate a reported pedestrian strike.
Detectives say that for unknown reasons, Zaheer lost control of the Camry and traveled out of the left lane and onto the shoulder, where Singh was walking from the back of the trailer to the tractor when he was struck.
At the time of the crash, Singh was parked on the shoulder of I-95 with his hazard lights on, they noted.
Zaheer had three other passengers in his Toyota at the time of the crash, all of whom refused treatment following the crash. Singh was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.
Southbound lanes were closed on I-95 for approximately three hours as the crash was investigated and the scene was cleared.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation and subsequent consultation with the Harford County State’s Attorney.
